Socio-Economic Survey and Analysis

The socio-economic analysis in the Mekong Delta will consist of three main components: 1) participatory socio-economic field surveys, 2) analysis of socio-economic databases available, and 3) policy analysis of the Mekong Delta.

The socio-economic field surveys to be conducted in the Mekong Delta will address several critical questions related to the interconnections between the delta’s water resources and socio-economic situation. The focus of the field surveys will be on 1) the most important livelihoods and their connection to the water resources, and on 2) current environmental and water-related changes, problems and trends.

In addition to the field surveys, the analysis of socio-economic databases available for the Mekong Delta will be conducted. The aim of the database analysis is to support and complement the information derived from the socio-economic field surveys. In order to make the database analysis easier and its results more comprehensible, the delta will be grouped into representative areas based on different hydrological and social factors in a similar way than was done in the Tonle Sap Area during the WUP-FIN Phase 1.

For the policy analysis of the Mekong Delta, a Policy Model based on Bayesian Probability Networks will be constructed. The policy model looks at different water-related policies and actors, and enables a systematic risk analysis of different development scenarios, key policy options, and consequent environmental and social impacts on different development objectives.
