Tonle Sap Lake Catchment

Lake's size increases from approximately 2'700 km2 during the dry season up to 15'000 km2 at the height of the wet season flooding, while the volume of the lake increases from 1.3 km3 up to 60-70 km3. The Tonle Sap Catchment includes in total 13 subcatchments. The total area of the lake's catchment is around 85'000 km2. Consequently, the lake functions as a natural overflow basin for the Mekong River system maintaining the ecological stability downstream.

The darker blue in the picture shows the dry season lake area while the lighter blue shows the floodplain of the lake (year 2000 flood).
